Wow what a wonderful day we had on Friday at Kaiiwi beach! We had so much fun exploring, learning and having fun. We learnt about stream pollution, soil layers, shell types, bugs, plant adaptations, erosion, and we even saw a fresh water spring in the sand. It was awesome sending time with our class and discussing and discovering together. Later in the day we enjoyed the whole school sea swim. This was of course a highlight!
Thank you to everyone who helped to organise such a fun-filled, valuable day!

I am me... I am strong!
This week we kicked off our beginning of year unit 'I AM ME. I AM STRONG'. The key understandings for this unit are all about being strong individuals but also developing and becoming strong as a team and as a class.
So far we have shared some things about ourselves and are working collaboratively to develop our shared understandings of managing our selves and relating to others. We have looked at what kind of learners we are and how we can set goals towards being stronger individuals.
Stay tuned for updates on our learning.

ISMART goals!
Today in Ruma Rima, we learnt about ISMART goals. We did a lot of brianstorming and discussing about what ISMART means and stands for. We looked at some examples of goals and used the ISMART rules to decide whether they were suitable goals. We identified higher order thinking and how using ISMART rules to set our goals can really influence our goal setting and whether or not we set ourselves up for success.
Following this learning we are now working towards setting some ISMART goals of our own. Identifying our strengths and weaknesses is the first step.
Below is our first brainstorm, showing what we thought the letters might stand for:
Then, Miss Fleet gave us what each of the letters stood for (black) then we discussed and came up with what those words actually mean.

When we set goals, we will be say "I will......." not "I want....."
OUR GOALS WILL BE ISMART!

Name Art!
It was wonderful to get a splash of colour on the wall this morning! Everyone's names completed with pastel and paint are so striking and have added a lovely boarder to the tops of our walls. Come in and check out the real things!

We are back!
What a wonderful first day we had back in Ruma Rima.
It was so exciting to see and meet all the faces of Room 5 for this year! We have a great group and we are all so looking forward to the year ahead!
Today we got straight into setting up some of our classroom routines, our books, swimming and had plenty of fun along the way!
Check out the faces of Room 5 2018. Aren't we a fantastic looking bunch?!

Going, Going, GONE!
This week we have been working on some creative, expository pieces of writing. We have been writing advertisements to sell some pretty extraordinary properties! It is fair to say that Miss Fleet wants to buy all of our houses!
These were the houses we had to sell:
We did extremely well and used our very best persuasive language and great vocabulary.
Here are some examples. Wouldn't you buy these straight away?!

End of year fun sports day!
Yesterday we all had an amazingly fun day!
First up we rotated around many different fun activities and games from water relays to human wheel barrow races.
The 400m finals were a hit and all the students ran exceptionally well. A special congratulations to Lucy and Logan for taking out the races.
Then we watched a fantastic cricket match of students vs adults, where we witnessed some outstanding skills on display. What a great way to open the new cricket pitch.
We then enjoyed lovely cool ice blocks as a well needed 'cool down'!
In the afternoon we had an awesome time slipping, sliding and splashing!
We couldn't of had a nicer day for so many exciting, fun filled activities!

Friction Testing
This week we conducted an experiment to test the friction created by different types of sport balls on the same surface of concrete.
Our Aim:
To find which ball produces the most friction when connecting with a concrete surface, therefore determining the speed of motion
Materials used:
Balls
1 meter ruler
1 timer
Ball Types:
Results:
We discovered that we had a range of different results that suggested a number of different ideas about which ball was fastest, slowest or produced the most/least amount of friction.
Post Discussion:
We decided that the experiment we conducted was an unfair test as there were too many inconsistencies and differences between different groups and different tests.
Consistent Variables:

Post Discussion:
We decided that the experiment we conducted was an unfair test as there were too many inconsistencies and differences between different groups and different tests.
Consistent Variables:
- test distance (1 meter)
- all groups used the exact same balls
- all tests were done on the same concrete surface
Inconsistent Variables:
- Students ability with timing and different tools to time
- Amount of force applied to the ball causing it to move.
Today we are going to looking at our last 2 experiments and why/ how they were unfair tests and how we can adjust them to ensure they produce accurate and fair results. We will keep you posted!

Hunger Games Short Stories
From a recent page in our shared novel, 'The Hunger Games' we created some short stories and tried to be as creative as we could with what we came up with. It was certainly a lot more difficult than we thought!
Check out some of our work!
